What it's for
Modern shapewear is a smoothing layer. Its job is to make a dress hang the way it did on the hanger, to stop a waistband or a bra band from showing through a knit, and to let you wear a fitted skirt without thinking about it all evening. That's it. It is not a corset and it is not a diet. Buy it for the smoothing and you'll be pleased; buy it expecting to drop a size and you'll be disappointed and sore.
Match the piece to the outfit
- Fitted dress: a full slip. It smooths from bust to hem in one layer and stops the dress from clinging.
- Fuller dress or a skirt: a half slip, from waist down. Lighter, cooler, and enough.
- Slim pant or straight skirt: a high-waist brief. High-waist means it reaches the bra band, so there's nothing to roll over at the waist.
- Where the smoothing is needed at the thigh: a thigh shaper, which is a high-waist brief with legs.
- Fitted top or a thin knit: a smoothing camisole. It also hides a bra line.
Body Hush, the label we carry, makes all of these.
Why a size down is a mistake
This is the single most common shapewear error and it's why so many women say they hate it. A piece bought too small doesn't smooth more; it rolls down at the waist, digs at the thigh, pushes what it can't hold somewhere else, and has to be adjusted all night. The right size feels like a firm hug that you forget about after five minutes. If you're between sizes, go up. If you can't decide, try both in the fitting room and walk around.
Light control is the norm
Most of what we sell is light to medium control, because that's what smooths without squeezing and what people will actually wear. Firm control exists and has its place under a very fitted dress, but it's a special-purpose garment, not an everyday one.
Try it under the outfit
A slip that's perfect under one dress is the wrong length under another. A brief that's invisible under a wool pant shows under a thin knit. So bring the outfit, or buy them together. If you bought the dress here, we already know what's going to work under it, and we'll fit the shapewear and the bra in the same fitting-room visit.
When to skip it
Under jeans, under a structured jacket, under anything with its own lining, and on any day when you'd rather not. Comfort is the point. Shapewear is one tool for it, not a requirement.
A note on medical garments
Compression garments for lymphedema, post-surgical binders and similar are medical items and should be fitted through your care team or a medical supply boutique. Fashion shapewear is not a substitute, and we'll say so rather than sell you the wrong thing.
